There are some very nice Android tablets out there if you're willing to pay $200+ (or $150+ if you do your homework and order a handful of Chinese brands). What's been missing in the Android tablet market, pretty much forever, is a budget friendly device that doesn't stink. The Amazon Fire tablets come close, but they're getting a little long in the tooth and last I checked you have to bend over backward to get access to the Play Store on them, since Amazon wants you playing within their walled garden.
Umidigi has a history of knocking it out of the park with their budget Android phones, so I was excited to see this product hit the market. I actually had just ordered what may be my forever tablet, one of the aforementioned Chinese market devices, in January of this year. Still, I jumped on this since just after release they had a coupon available making the price less than $75 shipped. After playing around with it here and there for the past month, my wife and I decided to set it up for my mother-in-law and give it to her for Christmas since she does almost all of her internet browsing on her phone these days, with it's tiny (and broken) screen. This will be a huge upgrade for her.
There are two areas where Umidigi devices typically shine. Battery life and screen quality for the market segment they're in. This device ticks off both of those categories. The screen is big, bright and vibrant. Though I do like the other tablet I got in January a lot, and it has a 4k screen, I find the screen on this Umidigi more pleasant to use. Everything is brighter, and it's plenty bright to take outside on a sunny day. My tablet struggles in bright lighting at maximum screen brightness. The G1 Tab comes with a plastic film screen protector that doesn't seem prone to scratching, though it is pretty easy to smudge.
Battery life is another strength. I'm still using a 2019 Power 3 smartphone from Umidigi and I hope I'm using it until some pries it from my cold, dead hands. It still goes 3+ days between charges. This tablet easily goes a full day of internet browsing/video watching and I've been charging it every 5-7 days if it's mostly just sitting around between uses.
All of the usual features work as you would expect. Bluetooth connections were reliable. Wi-fi didn't have any problems to speak of. The camera is about as good as you'd expect an 8mp shooter to be. The selfie camera is perfectly adequate for video conferencing.
The 4-core Rockchip SoC won't meet any high-end Android gaming needs, but it should be adequate for anything that isn't HD 3D. Rockchips have a history of being used in emulation-focused android gaming devices. It has been plenty snappy for normal productivity use in our time with it.
In summary, you'd probably be hard-pressed to find an Android tablet in the under $100 price range that will outperform this device. It is a big step up from the usual Walmart or Best Buy $75 Black Friday Android tablets. Keeping in form, Umidigi has produced another budget winner here.
